Casually Addicted’s 2012 PS Vita Game Of The Year

It’s been a bumpy ride for the PlayStation Vita with low sales and negative press stories hurting Sony’s handheld.

But amongst all the bad stories and problems with sales the Vita has been blessed with a plethora of games and it’s made the little handheld worth the purchase.

From a generous launch line-up that saw Nathan Drake don the handheld space for the first time, the summer was filled with gravity defying Kat’s which took us all the way through to dressing up as a female assassin and street racing on the go during the winter months.

We here at Casually Addicted know a good handheld system when we see one and the Vita has shone for us through the dark sky.

We’re at the end of 2012 and it’s now time to crown Casually Addicted’s 2012 PS Vita Game of the Year.

The February launch brought us our first nomination in the form of Uncharted: Golden Abyss.  It’s one of the best looking handheld games ever created and Bend Studio done Naughty Dog proud with their take on a Nathan Drake adventure.

A fluid plot and a likeable cast mixed with a console like experience and it truly was Uncharted on the go.  It took Uncharted back to the innocence of the original Uncharted and in addition to Bend’s own ideas made Uncharted: Golden Abyss not just the little brother to it’s PS3 brethren but a brilliant game in it’s own right.

Sony then unleashed an original IP onto Vita owners in the form of Gravity Rush.  A wonderful game from Studio Japan that introduced us to Kat and Dusty and became the origin story of how Kat discovers who she is and what she must do to save the world.

The game’s cel-shaded look and french influence just oozes class out of Vita’s OLED display and will turn anyone’s head.  It’s one of our highest rated games this year and once you play it it’s easy to see why.

The late October night’s gave us two more nominations in the form of Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation and Need For Speed: Most Wanted.  Both titles were similar as they each craved to be compared to they’re console counterparts but isn’t it unfair to compare games on two different types of hardware?

Both games were a delight to play and each scored highly with us and rightly deserve they’re places as nominees.

Our last game came somewhat out of the blue, Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward was a game that we have to admit wasn’t on our radar.  But after over 30 hours with the title it’s one of our favourites.  An extremely strong plot and some ingenious puzzles kept us captivated and involved.

Editor’s note: Persona 4 Golden has not been nominated because it has not been released in Europe, while it is out in the US we have not been able to play a copy of Persona fully and so we can’t nominate it.
