Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Trophy Guide

After four years of waiting we have finally been blessed with a trophy patch for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.  Initially released just before trophies became mandatory for PlayStation 3 games, MGS4 was certainly the one game most people wanted a patch for – not that you need another excuse to play this amazing game but it helps.

[wpspoiler name=”Trophy Info” style=”wpui-blue”]

100% Completion Rating: 8/10

Hours to 100%: 80hrs to 100hrs

Playthroughs needed: Minimum of eight for emblem collecting

Is online required: No

Most difficult: Completing the Boss Extreme run for ‘Sounds of the Battlefield’

*Please be aware that any saves before the patch will not unlock trophies.  A new game must be made for trophies to be earned*

Before you start your platinum hunt please be aware that you will need all 40 emblems for the ‘Sounds of the Battlefield’ trophy.  Please use this list of emblems to plan out your run.  This guide has been made to give you a rough idea as to how to go about claiming your platinum, the good thing about MGS4 is that there are multiple ways to go about earning the platinum.  The first playthrough detailed below is based on an easier difficulty to knock out most of the miscellaneous and story related trophies.  Afterwards we would advise to start your Big Boss emblem because from then on it’s plain sailing (but time consuming) for the platinum.

While we wouldn’t want to make you follow our trophy guide exactly we must say that Metal Gear Solid 4 gives you a lot of room for obtaining the platinum.  For our first playthrough we’ll try to get most of the miscellaneous and story trophies out the way before narrowing our search down for the emblems.

Hands Up

Held an enemy soldier at gunpoint and performed a body check.

This can be done the moment your armed.  Sneak up behind behind an enemy then press and hold L1 to hold up an enemy.

You enjoy all the killing that’s why

Killed many enemies in one area, and vomited.

Just before you enter the building to join up for Rat PT 01 there is an area where PMC soldiers will infinitely respawn.  Kill as many as you can until you hear a flashback from Liquid and then watch Snake vomit as the trophy pings.

Handle with caution *hidden trophy*

Broke off the most important part of a statue.

Before picking up the Mk. II there will be a row of two statues with a space for a third one.  Climb up onto the gap and press triangle to allow Snake to pose.  Pose and release three times and Snake will snap over a statue’s more important bit.

Hurt me more

Shocked an enemy soldier using Mk. II/III.

As soon as you get the Mk. II from Ocelot early in Act 1 take control of the mini-Metal Gear, sneak up behind an enemy PMC and shock them.

Drum Can addict

Knocked an enemy soldier flying using a Drum Can.

After meeting Johnny and taking the Drum Can, equip it then press triangle to go on its side and roll into an enemy PMC for the trophy.
Cleared Act 1 (Middle East).LIQUID SUN

When you complete act 1 the Liquid Sun trophy will automatically be unlocked.

Frog Soldier Doll *hidden trophy*

Escaped the Haven Troopers in the Middle East by non-lethal means, and obtained the Frog Soldier Doll.

Defeat all the Haven Troopers with Rat PT 01 using non-lethal means.  Rat Patrol will use lethal means but that doesn’t affect the trophy, just make sure you don’t kill anyone.  The doll will be available in a side room after you go down the elevator and see a cutscene.

LIQUID SUN *hidden trophy*

Cleared Act 1 (Middle East)

Complete Act 1

Emotion Control

Controlled an enemy soldier’s emotions using an Emotive Magazine

After meeting Drebin in Act 1 you can purchase an Emotion Magazine from Drebin’s shop in the main menu.  Simply buy the magazine and put it in front of an approaching PMC troop – let him be mesmerised by it’s contents and await the trophy ping.

Crop Circle *hidden trophy*

Found a crop circle and heard a mysterious voice.

This trophy is one for fans of MGS2.  During the section where you must track Naomi’s footprints before crossing the river there will be a crop circle in an opening on the same side that your supposed to come through just a bit further up.  Simply run towards the Crop Circle to hear a very strange MGS2 flashback.

Are you an Otaku too?

Viewed all model posters.

This trophy will require viewing four posters of ‘Akina’ during Act 2 and 3.  When looking at the poster in first person Snake must mention ‘Akina’ for it to register.

Two posters will be in the Vista Mansion section of Act 2 while the other two are in Act 3.  Use the video below to help you with the location.  Credit to PrimalLiquid.

Laughing Octopus Doll *hidden trophy*

Defeated Laughing Octopus by non-lethal means, and obtained the Laughing Octopus Doll.

Use only non-lethal weapons to defeat Laughing Octopus’ Beast and Beauty form.  The doll can be picked up during the Beauty form on one of the beds.

That tune is his mind control music

Played Oishii Two-han Seikatsu and made one of the BB Corps dance.

During the Beauty section of any B&B fight wait for a few minutes and the room will turn white, when this happens equip the iPod and play Oishii Two-han Seikatsu.  The Beauty will then dance – unlocking the trophy.

SOLID SUN *hidden trophy*

Cleared Act 2 (South America)

Complete Act 2

Raging Raven Doll *hidden trophy*

Defeated Raging Raven by non-lethal means, and obtained the Raging Raven Doll.

Use only non-lethal weapons to defeat Raging Raven’s Beast and Beauty form.  The Moisin Nagant is ideal for this due to it’s non-lethal ability and extended range.  However if you don’t have the weapon only have the basic tranquiliser then stay down on the bottom floor, Raven will eventually come and look for you giving you amble time to line up a close range head shot.  The doll will be in the corner of the bottom floor duing Raven’s beauty form.

TWIN SUNS *hidden trophy*

Cleared Act 3 (Eastern Europe)

Complete Act 3

Overhead view – Just like old times….

Used overhead view on Shadow Moses Island.

A nice easy trophy, position the camera above Snake when you arrive at the heliport for around thirty seconds to hear a flashback and a trophy ping.

Ghost Photography Addict

Snapped at least 5 shots of ghosts on Shadow Moses Island.

For this trophy you need to pick up the Digital Camera that is located on the plane during  mission briefings.  Search around with the Mark II/III during Act 2 or Act 4’s mission briefing.

Around Shadow Moses there will be ghostly images that crop up after using the digital camera.  Use the video below for the locations of a few.

Crying Wolf Doll *hidden trophy*

Defeated Crying Wolf by non-lethal means, and obtained the Crying Wolf Doll.

Yet again the Moisin-Nagant will come in handy during this sniper duel but it’s not the only solution.  If you can sneak up close to Wolf then a Smoke Grenade followed by two Stun Grenades can also deal damage, if you can get the rhythm right you can finish Crying Wolf off in seconds.

LIQUID! *hidden trophy*

Piloted Metal Gear REX and screamed at your enemy.

During the REX vs RAY fight at the end of the Act press triangle to get REX to scream.

TWIN SUNS *hidden trophy*

Cleared Act 4 (Shadow Moses)

Complete Act 4.

Screaming Mantis Doll *hidden trophy*

Defeated Screaming Mantis by non-lethal means, and obtained the Screaming Mantis Doll.

Defeat Screaming Mantis using either the Mantis or Sorrow Doll and the Screaming Mantis Doll will be at the door where you entered during the Beauty stage of the boss fight.

You’re Pretty Good

Got kissed by Ocelot during the final battle.

During the final fight with Ocelot continue as normal until the MGS3 section where the health bars will be white.  During this section let Ocelot grab you and when the press triangle prompt appears ignore it.  Ocelot will then proceed to plant a big wet one on Snake.

OLD SUN *hidden trophy*

Cleared Act 5 (Outer Haven)

Complete Act 5.

The trophies listed below are ones that are impossible to pick up during your first run.  We would suggest you pick these trophies up outside of your Big Boss emblem run.

Divine Wind

Caused a “divine wind” using the Tanegashima.

The Tanegashima is the most expensive weapon in the game coming in at 1000000 Drebin Points.  However you can actually purchase the weapon during Act 5 for 500000.  The weapon itself isn’t great but each time you fire you have a 1 in 3 chance of causing a tornado like effect and sweeping up all before you – but this only works outside.  So use this weapon outside, get a tornado going and receive the trophy.

Can You Feel My Power Now!!!?

Took control of an enemy soldier’s body using the Mantis Doll or Sorrow Doll.

After defeating Screaming Mantis you’ll receive either the Mantis Doll or Sorrow Doll depending on which you went after during your battle.

When you collecting your equipment from Mk II at the start of a new game, equip your chosen Doll and shoot an enemy to control them.

I just don’t fear death

Ended ALERT status while wearing the Corpse Camo.

You will unlock the Corpse Camo when you’ve finished a game with over 50 continues.  When you unlock the Puma/Chicken emblem you’ll receive this automatically.

Equip the Corpse Camo and enter Alert phase, once the Alert phase runs out the trophy will ping.

Obtained the Solar Gun.

To get the Solar Gun you need to collect all the Dolls during your first playthrough by defeating the Haven Soldiers and all 4 members of the B&B core by non-lethal means.  When you meet up with the MkII during your next playthrough you’ll be given the Solar Gun.

FaceCamo Addict

Obtained 10 or more types of FaceCamo (excluding types obtained via password).

Throughout your first playthrough you’ll receive normal FaceCamo, Young Snake, Young Snake with Bandana and the MGS1 Snake camo.  Defeating the B&B core non-lethally will give you FaceCamo’s for Laughing Octopus, Raging Raven, Crying Wolf and Screaming Mantis.

Completing the game and earning the Big Boss emblem will unlock the Big Boss FaceCamo while collecting all 69 weapons will give you the Drebin FaceCamo.

The rest of the FaceCamo is obtained during mission briefings by using the Mark II.  Ram into Naomi and Sunny to obtain both Raiden A and Raiden B.  While ramming into Campbell and Otacon will unlock their respective FaceCamo’s as well.

Flashback Mania

During the many (many) cutscenes of MGS4 you will sometimes see a prompt in the corner in the form of an X.  Pressing X will allow you to see flashbacks, this trophy will only unlock once you have seen every flashback MGS4 has to offer.

Luckily this trophy is available over multiple playthroughs, you don’t have to achieve this all in one go.

The video below shows you all flashbacks needed for the trophy including two hidden flashbacks at the end of Act 4 and one after the Screaming Mantis fight.

Infinite Ammo

Obtained the Bandana

This will be achieved when earning the Big Boss Emblem – details of which are on page 2. You need to go through the whole game without killing anyone.

Stealth Camouflage

Obtained the Stealth Camouflage

This will be achieved when earning the Big Boss Emblem – details of which are on page 2. You need to go through the whole game without activating an alert phase.

I am THE expert on weapons

Obtained all weapons (excluding weapons obtained via password).

Most of the weapons can be bought in Drebin’s store.  There are 69 in all but only 65 weapons are needed for this trophy.  When you are purchasing weapons from Drebin’s store make sure to buy them during Act 5 as there’s a 50% discount off the normal price.

The following weapons are ones that can’t be bought and are needed for the trophy:

XM8 – Found during Act 2 after the scene with Drebin, it’s to the left of the Power Plant under a shelter.

VSS – Found in the Containment Facility Centre in Act 2

Mk23 – Found during Act 4 under the truck near the Helipad

Chaff Grenade – Found in the middle of the Helipad in Act 4

Mantis Doll – Acquired during Screaming Mantis Fight

Sorrow Doll – Acquired during Screaming Mantis Fight

Solar Gun – See Sunlight trophy on Page 1 for more information

Race Gun – Complete the game once

Smoke Grenade (Colour variants) – All four colour variants of the Smoke Grenades must be bought from Drebin.  These only unlock after completing the game.

Sounds of the Battlefield

Obtained all iPod® tracks (excluding tracks obtained via password).

While obtaining all iPod tracks seem like nothing more than a collect-a-thon the truth of the matter is that obtaining this trophy is the hardest of the game.  After collecting all 40 emblems you will be awarded what should be your last iPod track.  This means you will also need to achieve the Big Boss emblem – a heroic achievement in itself.  To help you with this we have an achievement guide on the next page.

For the general iPod tracks found in the game please watch the video below from heroes0209:

  1. Hey there, I think your website might be having browser compatibility issues.
When I look at your website in Chrome, it looks fine but when opening in
Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a
quick heads up! Other then that, very good blog!

  2. Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this blog. It’s
simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appeal. I must say that you’ve done a superb
job with this. Also, the blog loads extremely fast for me on Chrome.
    Exceptional Blog!
